According to a spokesperson of the United States DOT per WKBW:
Airlines would be able to only to accept service animals. which are only dogs who are trained to do work or tasks for a qualified individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual or other mental disability.
Good news is that it will be up to the airline as to whether or not to allow emotional support animals, so choose wisely! Do some research on whether or not an airline will accept your small companion before you buy your tickets.
