There are some concerts you go to because you love the artist, and then there are concerts that remind you just how much an artist helped create the soundtrack to an entire era.

Ne-Yo and Akon’s Nights Like This Tour was BOTH.

On Friday, July 24, Ne-Yo and Akon brought their co-headlining Nights Like This Tour to Darien Lake Amphitheater, and if you came up during the 2000s, the night felt like somebody hit shuffle on your old playlist and turned the volume ALL the way up.

The Darien Lake stop was part of the North American leg of their 2026 global tour, which officially kicked off in Vancouver on June 17 and continues through August. The concept is different from your traditional concert: instead of one artist performing a full set followed by the other, Ne-Yo and Akon trade the spotlight throughout the night.

We had JUST made it to our seats as the opening act was wrapping up, and from what we caught, she was good. Then it was showtime. The show was scheduled for 8 PM at Darien Lake Amphitheater, and they got right to it. Ne-Yo kicked things off with a full production. We’re talking dancers, live musicians, strings, brass and that polished showmanship that has always been part of the Ne-Yo experience.

Then came Akon. His opening immediately changed the energy, and bringing out Les Twins took it to another level. If you know Les Twins, you already know what they bring to a stage. Their movement, personality and energy gave Akon’s entrance that extra push we needed. From there, Ne-Yo and Akon went back and forth throughout the night.

It worked because their energies are completely different. Ne-Yo gives you the smooth R&B performer, choreography, vocals, suits and production. Akon gives you that raw party energy that takes you right back to when “Locked Up,” “Smack That” and “Don’t Matter” were everywhere.

And the catalog? RIDICULOUS. Across the tour, the set has included Ne-Yo records like “Miss Independent,” “Because of You,” “Sexy Love,” “So Sick,” “Closer” and “One in a Million,” while Akon has been running through “Locked Up,” “Smack That,” “I’m So Paid,” “Bananza (Belly Dancer),” “Don’t Matter,”  and “Beautiful”.

But my favorite part of the night wasn’t even their own records. At one point, the show turned into a game centered around songs the two have written or helped create for other artists. THIS was my favorite part. You could hear the reaction from the audience when certain songs dropped because I don't think everyone realized how deep Ne-Yo and Akon's fingerprints are in music.

We know the artists. We know the hooks. We know every word. But we don't always know who was behind the pen or behind the record.

Ne-Yo's writing career alone is crazy. Before becoming the Ne-Yo we know today, his songwriting helped put him on the map. He co-wrote Mario's No. 1 hit Let Me Love You,” and his credits went on to include some HUGE records for other artists. Live Nation specifically highlights his work on Rihanna's “Unfaithful,” “Take a Bow” and “Russian Roulette,” along with Beyoncé's “Irreplaceable.”

Some of the records connected to Ne-Yo's pen include:

  • Beyoncé – “Irreplaceable”
  • Mario – “Let Me Love You”
  • Rihanna – “Take a Bow”
  • Rihanna – “Unfaithful”
  • Rihanna – “Russian Roulette”

And Akon's influence goes beyond his own hits too. Throughout his career, he has worked as a writer, producer, collaborator and label executive, helping shape records and artists beyond what we heard from him as a solo performer. On the Nights Like This Tour, that behind-the-scenes legacy is part of the show too, including revisiting his connection to Lady Gaga's early career and music.

Hearing those records in the middle of the concert made you appreciate both of them differently. And when they started going back-to-back with Beyoncé records? it also reinforced why this tour works. You're not watching two artists who simply happened to be popular around the same time. You're watching two people whose work helped define what pop and R&B sounded like during that era.

Now y'all know I have to give Buffalo its love.

One of my other favorite parts of the night was hearing DJ Brei, one of Buffalo's own, holding down the DJ duties.

Between performances and during the transitions, Brei kept the energy where it needed to be. There is an art to DJing a concert like this because you're playing for thousands of people who came to see major artists, and your job is to keep that momentum alive while the stage resets. She KILLED IT.  Seeing DJ Brei talent on a tour of this level made the night even better.

I also need to talk about Ne-Yo's production. At one point, his dancers were literally in the air. Flying. Hanging. Performing off chains. Meanwhile, I'm sitting in my seat trying to figure out how somebody trusts a chain AND their own upper-body strength enough to look graceful while suspended above a stage.

The aerial work added another layer to Ne-Yo's performance and made his portions of the concert feel like an actual production rather than simply a collection of songs. Reviews from earlier stops on the tour have also highlighted Ne-Yo's choreography and aerial performers as part of the show's visual experience.

That is what I appreciate about an artist with a catalog this established still putting effort into the show. Yes, we came to hear the hits. But give us something to WATCH too.

By the end of the night, the biggest takeaway for me was just how much music these two men have been connected to.

There were the records we expected. There were the songs that instantly transported you back to a specific year, relationship, club, college party or moment in life. But there was also that reminder that their impact stretches beyond the songs with their names on them.

The Nights Like This Tour gave us me what I didn't know I needed.
