Coming up later this month on October 24th, Western New York will transition into 10 digit calling, which means anytime you make a phone call you will have to include the area code. So if you live in Hamburgh and are calling someone in Clarence, you will have to dial 716 and then their phone number.

If you are like me, chances are all your phone numbers for family and friends who live in Western New York have only seven digits.

Some of us when thru this kind of transition years ago when Rochester was put into the 585 area code and you have to dial 10 digits to call anyone over there.

Well..now every single call you make will have to have 10 digits. That means updating your contact list on your smartphone.

So why is 10 digit calling necessary? According to the FCC, there are more phones in America than there are people and some areas had to adopt two or more area codes for the same location to keep up with the demand for new numbers.

10 digit calling has been enabled across the country since April of this year, and as of October 24th, all calls will now need to dial the area code along with the phone number.

This 10 digit dialing applies to all phone numbers, both personal and business lines.
