Laughing Gas During Labor On The Rise In WNY Hospitals
Save the epidurals ladies--please pass the gas!
Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is a new alternative for women struggling with pain during labor. More and more hospitals like Weston at Mercy Hospital and Oishei Children's Hospital are starting to offer this method as an alternative to the typical medications.
According to WKBW, women having contractions will breathe in the laughing gas with a mask, and once they feel relieved they just remove the mask. This gas is similar to the gas that dentists use, but it's not quite as strong.
Chair of OBGYN at Mercy Hospital Dr. Susan Littler explained that
"The goal is to relieve pain, not knock a patient out."
