Looking at weather forecast data for Friday, January 30, 2026, by all accounts, Buffalo and a large chunk of the Western New York region are in for a huge and dangerous cold weather spell. Temps are expected to hover around zero and that's forcing people all over the Buffalo area to rethink their plans for the week and weekend.

Things are expected to be so bad that some businesses are bringing their employees inside to keep them safe, and school districts all over the region are either closing their doors or going remote to keep kids home and warm, along with keeping buses off the roads.

Now, with the polar vortex that's got Buffalo firmly in its grip, local government officials are making a change to some city services to try and keep some public employees safe.

If more than three feet of snow falling over the past couple of weeks wasn't enough, an urgent cold weather advisory from the National Weather Service has many people all over the region looking for ways to keep kids and workers home.

Due to dangerously cold temperatures, and for the safety of our sanitation workers, trash and recycling pickup is canceled for Friday, January 30 in the City of Buffalo. If you are scheduled for Friday pickup, please plan accordingly and place your waste out for pickup next week on Friday.
-Sean Ryan, Mayor of Buffalo, New York

Not only are Buffalo's school kids going to be home, but it looks like staff from the streets and sanitation responsible for trash pickup will have a day where they will not be outside for multiple hours straight.

Bitterly cold wind chills as low as 24 below zero will cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.
-National Weather Service

Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan has ordered trash pickup for Friday, January 30th, to be suspended. City residents who have trash will need to hang on to it until next week, when services will resume, weather permitting.

Unfortuatnely, this is a fact of life when living in an area like Buffalo. But the people of Western New York are hearty, and we will get through it.
