
How Does Buffalo’s Property Taxes Compare To Other Cities In New York State?
There are lots of great reasons why people choose to live in the Empire State. From the food and culture to the community and lifestyle, New York remains one of the best states in the nation for many reasons. Unfortunately, one of the reasons why people rail against New York is the taxes.
New York State routinely ranks as one of the most tax-burdened states in the nation, with high sales, property, and income taxes, and that trend doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon.
New York State has a lot of infrastructure, both physical and societal, and maintaining that takes money. While it's not a great feeling to fork over so much of your hard-earned money, there's no question that it's nice to have the benefits of a modern society.
How Do Property Tax Rates Vary From City to City In New York
Now, while there is a lot of talk about how expensive the property taxes are in the state, those taxes aren't equally applied around New York. Some cities like Elmira, New York, or Binghamton, New York, have pretty high property taxes, while other cities like Rye, New York, and Glen Cove have pretty low taxes.
Buffalo is currently in the middle of a financial deficit that is going to ultimately result in a tax increase for city residents. We likely won't know how much of an increase is needed until April, when the Mayor releases his proposed 2026/27 budget.
But have you ever wondered how and where Buffalo's taxes sit when compared to other big cities in the state? That answer lies in some data that's been published by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, which gives a city-by-city listing of the tax rates and tax levy of every city, town, village, and county in New York.
