It seems like an odd thing to have a shortage of, but the summer of 2022 may become known for its lack of lifeguards.  There has been a shortage of them throughout the country causing many cities and towns to keep pools and beaches closed for the season.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Darien Lake State Park may have to keep its beach closed this summer due to the lifeguard shortage.

Now, on Tuesday morning, the City of Buffalo announced that it would be keeping all nine of its outdoor swimming pools closed for the summer season due to a "severe" lifeguard shortage.

Two indoor pools, at Cazenovia Park and Lovejoy Park, will be open from July 1 through September 5 (Labor Day).

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said that the city's two indoor pools located at  Abbott Road and Lovejoy Street will remain open with extended hours on weekdays and weekends at those pools.  He went on to say that the fees would be eliminated all summer at the open pools.

The hours for each pool are as follows:

Cazenovia Pool (626 Abbott Road)
Monday - 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Tuesday - CLOSED
Wednesday - 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday – 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday – 8 a.m. to 7p.m.
Saturday - 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lovejoy Pool (1171 E. Lovejoy St.)
Monday - CLOSED
Tuesday – 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Wednesday – 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday – 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday - 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The city also will have 10 of its splash pads open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day. The 11th splash pad at Allison Park is currently closed for repairs.
