It looks like Americans, including New Yorkers, may actually benefit from the cuts Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, is making across multiple agencies. The cuts have been causing all types of controversy and spawning lawsuits left and right. Once the dust settles, which could be a while out, we may get some of whatever savings the reductions net. It has bothered me that they are doing all of this cost-cutting in the name of saving Americans money, but haven't said anything about cutting federal income tax for working-class New Yorkers. Trump has floated the idea of ending the federal income tax in favor of tariffs, but it's unclear how realistic that idea is.

Trump has gone on record and says he approves of sharing the money saved from DOGE's cuts with taxpayers, which is only right, in my opinion. After someone on Twitter suggested that Musk and DOGE should send $5,000 "dividend" checks to Americans, Musk said he would check with the president.
Trump signed off on the planned 'DOGE Dividend,' while conducting a press conference in Miami. He said the federal government will return 20 percent of the savings from the cost-cutting directly to taxpayers. Trump said,
“There’s even under consideration a new concept where we give 20% of the D.O.G.E savings to American citizens and 20% goes to paying down debt. The numbers are incredible, Elon, so many billions—hundreds of billions—and we’re thinking about giving 20% back to the American citizens.”

Now, don't get too excited, because we don't know how much money will actually be saved once all the terminations go through challenges in court. Trump has been getting hit with lawsuits and restraining orders since he began signing executive orders. It's unclear how much the 'DOGE Dividend' will cost the federal government.
