IRS Warns Of Tax Refund Delays For Certain New Yorkers
Some New Yorkers may experience delays in receiving their federal tax refund if they select certain credits. Certain New York families, who likely really need their refunds, may not get them as quickly as they would like.

The Internal Revenue Service has issued a warning to New Yorkers who select two popular credits - Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit - which can cause a refund to be delayed. If you select these credits, you will not receive your refund until around March 3, 2025, to give the IRS time to perform additional identity checks first. While it is mid-February already (Happy Valentine's Day), the IRS's website says,
"Under the federal Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) refunds before mid-February. Where's My Refund? should show an updated status by February 22 for most early EITC/ACTC filers. The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by March 3 if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return."
In addition to delays, New Yorkers can expect to pay higher property taxes to make up for Trump's decision to get rid of the Department of Education.
Trump's Cuts To Department of Education To Drive Up Taxes In NY
Governor Kathy Hochul says New Yorkers will be paying higher taxes. Grocery prices aren't coming down. Trump's tariffs are driving the cost of Chinese goods up. Gas has yet to drop back down to $2 per gallon. Egg prices are sky-high. The current rate of inflation is 2.9%. And now, Gov. Hochul says New Yorkers should expect to pay more taxes.

The Trump administration is set on cutting the federal government workforce significantly. With those cuts come less service and less funds. Although he still hasn't said he is cutting middle America's income taxes, he is planning to cut the budget. One of the departments he has in his crosshairs is the Department of Education. It's funny because I have seen many of his supporters say they are in favor of cutting the Department of Education, but the rural areas they live in rely on the DOE for their children's schooling.

Gov. Hochul wants to make New Yorkers aware that Trump's cuts to the DOE will likely drive taxes up in New York, according to News Nation,
"Your largest part of your local property tax bill is your school taxes. If that money evaporates from the federal government, where are they going to go? This is going to hit homeowners and businesses, and I want them to be aware of this consequence.”
Trump believes states and local governments should support schools, not the federal government.
