Governor Kathy Hochul says New Yorkers will be paying higher taxes. Grocery prices aren't coming down. Trump's tariffs are driving the cost of Chinese goods up. Gas has yet to drop back down to $2 per gallon. Egg prices are sky-high. The current rate of inflation is 2.9%. And now, Gov. Hochul says New Yorkers should expect to pay more taxes.

Trump's Cuts To Department of Education To Drive Up Taxes In NY

The Trump administration is set on cutting the federal government workforce significantly. With those cuts come less service and less funds. Although he still hasn't said he is cutting middle America's income taxes, he is planning to cut the budget. One of the departments he has in his crosshairs is the Department of Education. It's funny because I have seen many of his supporters say they are in favor of cutting the Department of Education, but the rural areas they live in rely on the DOE for their children's schooling.

In New York, federal public education funding per student from kindergarten through 12th grade is $2440, according to Newsweek. New York State received $11,675,266,614.25 in 2023. Of the $11 billion NY gets from the Department of Education, the Small, Rural School Achievement Program received $3,703,513 in 2023. In addition, the Rural and Low-income Schools Program received $2,004,925 in 2023. That doesn't include any funds outside of those two programs.

Gov. Hochul wants to make New Yorkers aware that Trump's cuts to the DOE will likely drive taxes up in New York, according to News Nation,

"Your largest part of your local property tax bill is your school taxes. If that money evaporates from the federal government, where are they going to go? This is going to hit homeowners and businesses, and I want them to be aware of this consequence.”

Trump believes states and local governments should support schools, not the federal government. It's still very unclear how Trump's cuts will reduce the tax burden for middle-class families in New York, if at all. If we are going to have to pick up the slack from all of the programs Trump is cutting from the federal government, we shouldn't be responsible for the same amount of taxes!
