Hundreds Team Up On MLK Day To Serve Buffalo, New York Community
All over the nation, today is a special day for people in the United States of America. Not only is it the Presidential Inauguration Day this year, but it is also the 42nd year we've celebrated the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the country. Since 1983, the third Monday in January has been reserved to honor the birthday of the venerable civil rights leader.
As with most Federal Holiday, today is set aside by the government to pay respect to the contributions the great Reverend Doctor King made to our society, and for the last 5 years, people all over Buffalo have gathered together to advise community service projects around the city in his honor.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, which AmeriCorps support to help coordinate groups around the country, was initially started by former Congressman John Lewis and Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis as part of the King Holiday and Service Act of 1994.
Of course, this year is no different as more than 300 people from Buffalo and Western New York gathered together at the Bethel AME Church to participate in more than 20 projects in the city. The 2025 MLK Jr. Day of Service is sponsored by Monarch of Infinite Possibilities, and the hundreds of volunteers will help the community by painting, recycling, and cleaning all around the region.
Supported in part by the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP, Buffalo Urban League, East Side Stewards, BLUEImage, Confident Girl Mentoring Program, Buffalo Common Council Member Zeneta Everhart, and others, these volunteers braved arctic temperatures in Buffalo to do good for the community.
Dr. King was no stranger to Buffalo or Western New York, as he frequented the area fairly often. Perhaps his most memorable time in the 716 was on November 9, 1967, when he gave a speech at Kleinhans Music Hall that went on for just about an hour.
