Black Business Month Event Left Me Thinking Bigger

I'm still reflecting on what an honor it was to host Bold Moves Only II: Built 2 Scale, presented by The Exchange at Beverly Gray. The room was filled with entrepreneurs, dreamers, builders, and people who are serious about creating something bigger than themselves. It wasn't just another conference; it was a reminder of what's possible when the right people come together with a shared purpose.

One of the greatest honors of the day was co-hosting the evening fireside chat alongside Derrick Parson, Executive Director of The Exchange at Beverly Gray, with the one and only John Hope Bryant, founder and CEO of Operation HOPE. To share that stage, help guide the conversation, and witness so many people leaning into every word was a full-circle moment for me.

We walked into the conversation with a stack of questions ready to go. The funny part? We barely needed them. We opened with one question, and John Hope Bryant took us on a journey. For nearly an hour and a half, he poured into the audience with story after story, lesson after lesson. I believe we only got through three questions because every answer was filled with wisdom worth sitting with.

One message that continues to stay with me was when he reminded us that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Spend more time listening than talking. That's exactly what happened during that fireside chat. We listened. We learned. We allowed the conversation to unfold naturally, and it became one of those moments you knew people would be talking about long after they left the room.

Bryant also shared the story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles and how a conversation with a banker at a young age changed the trajectory of his life. That encounter opened his eyes to the power of financial literacy and economic opportunity, work that would eventually lead him to found Operation HOPE and spend more than three decades helping people build financial dignity and generational wealth.

We also discussed his latest book, Capitalism for All: How Citizens, Businesses, and Government Can Create the American Dream Together, where he challenges the country to rethink capitalism by making financial knowledge and opportunity accessible to everyone, not just a select few.
