Walk to Cure Arthritis Buffalo: A Celebration of Resilience, Hope, and Community!
Get ready, Buffalo! The annual Walk to Cure Arthritis is here, and this year, it's more than just a walk, it's a powerful movement built on community, hope, and the strength to overcome. Talisa King, a passionate advocate for arthritis awareness, leads the charge this year. Talisa, who’s not only the first certified Arthritis Foundation Connect Facilitator in Western New York but also the founder of the Arthritis Support Network Buffalo, has been a driving force for change in our community.
This year’s event brings two incredible honorees to the spotlight, each of them sharing a story of perseverance, love, and dedication. Their journeys are a reminder of the strength that lies within those living with arthritis and the importance of community support.
The youth honoree is Joe Lorek, and at just 5 years old, shows us what it means to live life without limits despite the challenges that arthritis brings. Diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at a young age, Joe hasn’t let the disease define him. Whether it’s playing t-ball, zooming around on his bike, or gearing up to learn dirt biking, Joe’s zest for life is unstoppable. He continues to push through the swelling and pain in his knees and ankles, staying active and positive. Joe and his family are passionate about raising awareness for juvenile arthritis and helping others understand what it’s like for children living with chronic conditions. His courage and infectious enthusiasm are what make this event so special, walking for change, walking for hope, and walking to show every child with arthritis that they are not alone.
The adult honoree, Rachel Simon’s story is one of unwavering strength. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) while raising two young children, Rachel has faced daily challenges that many would find overwhelming. From the simple act of lifting her kids to getting out of bed, Rachel’s journey has been filled with obstacles. Yet, she has never let arthritis dictate her life. “There were days when the pain was relentless and the fatigue overwhelming,” Rachel shares. “But I’ve learned to adjust my expectations and find new ways to care for my family.” With the support of her loved ones, Rachel has redefined what it means to be strong, not through perfection, but through resilience and grace. Her children keep her motivated, reminding her of the purpose behind every step. Through her experience, Rachel has learned the power of self-advocacy, compassion, and the strength that comes from being part of a community.
Now, let’s take a moment to recognize Talisa King. After being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2012, Talisa turned her personal struggles into a driving force for change. She’s founded the Arthritis Support Network Buffalo and has raised more than $85,000 for research and support programs over the past eight years. Her tireless advocacy and dedication have made a significant impact on our community, and in 2018, former Mayor Byron Brown officially proclaimed May 12 as “Arthritis Support Network Day” in Buffalo to honor her contributions. Talisa’s leadership and compassion are what make this event possible, and we are fortunate to have her at the helm this year.
Arthritis doesn’t just affect a small group of people it impacts millions. In New York State alone, over 3.5 million adults live with arthritis, and nearly 1 in 4 residents is affected. Children aren’t exempt either, with over 300,000 nationwide battling juvenile arthritis. Many adults with arthritis face work limitations due to chronic pain and fatigue, especially those in physically demanding roles like caregiving, construction, and food service. The disease disproportionately impacts women, who make up 60% of arthritis cases in New York. There are over 100 types of arthritis and related conditions, each affecting people in different ways. These numbers highlight the importance of events like the Walk to Cure Arthritis, which bring awareness, support, and much-needed resources to those who need them most.
The Arthritis Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting arthritis, offering resources, advocacy, and funding for life-changing research. Their mission is to help people living with arthritis live their best lives and ultimately find a cure. Through their efforts, they’re providing tools and resources to support those who need it most.
“This walk isn’t just a fundraiser, it’s a movement,” says Talisa King. “We walk to celebrate every step taken in the face of pain, and to remind our community that arthritis doesn’t discriminate it impacts children, adults, athletes, artists, and everyday heroes.”
Whether you’re walking, rolling, cheering, or simply enjoying the vibe, there’s a place for you at the Walk to Cure Arthritis Buffalo. This event is about more than just raising funds, it’s about raising awareness and showing support for those living with arthritis. Together, we can make a difference and help those impacted by this condition know they are never alone.
