Reports Of Shots Fired Causes Lockdown At Buffalo University

Details are still emerging about reports of a shooting that occurred near Buffalo's Upper West Side and Black Rock neighborhoods, but what we do know has resulted in the Buffalo State University Campus being placed on lockdown by New York State University Police while they partner with the Buffalo Police Department to investigate.

Reports say that during the 8 pm hour on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, shots were fired in an incident that included multiple cars near the 900 block of Grant Street. That block, which is near a Tops Friendly Markets and the Polish Cadets Center, is just a few hundred feet north of Buffalo State, was on high alert around the neighborhood, and forced the University, which has a normal student population of around 6,000, on lockdown.

A spokesperson for the Buffalo Police Department advised that several people have been taken into custody related to the shooting, along with at least one gun, and investigators are working to find more details about what happened and why.

Detectives from the BPD and State University Police are working together to find answers.

Buffalo Police Have Been Pretty Busy Already This Week

The month of July has seen law enforcement in Western New York having to put in extra work, as several incidents this week have kept detectives and uniformed officers pretty busy on the streets of Buffalo.

• The early evening hours on Tuesday, July 22nd saw investigators responding to the Erie County Medical Center after someone arrived on thier own with gunshot wounds to their arm and face. Details from the victim led officers to Burgard Place in the Bailey / Doat neighborhood.
• Officers arrested a suspect related to a shooting that happened last week near Hampshire and W Ferry streets where someone was shot in the wrist. The man arrested, 30-year-old Israel DeJesus, was charged with multiple crimes, including First Degree Assault.

• The early morning hours on Sunday, July 19, saw officers responding to a call in the Blackrock Section of Buffalo, near Briggs Avenue and Tonawanda Street, where they found a man who was deceased from stab wounds.

While year-over-year crime statistics are down, Buffalo, like many other urban areas, is experiencing a crime uptick, which some experts say is common during the warmer months.
