Wu-Tang Clan At Darien Lake, What To Expect From The Setlist

I know, I know. I’m late getting this one out, but your girl has been attending back-to-back concerts and trying to recover in between. But there was NO WAY I could let Wu-Tang Clan at Darien Lake Amphitheater pass without talking about it.

The night kicked off with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Bizzy Bone was missing that night, and although he had been on the tour, I’m not sure what happened. Either way, Bone kept the energy high and gave us the classics.

But y’all know who I was waiting for. THE WU!

The video intro hit, RZA stepped onstage and made it clear Wu-Tang Clan was in the building. Then, one by one, the members appeared, jumping into their verses. It felt like the Avengers assembling!

Watching RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna take over the stage was something special. And while Ol’ Dirty Bastard is no longer with us, his son Young Dirty Bastard pulled up representing his father. From the movements and antics to how much he resembles ODB, watching him perform was simply amazing.

Throughout the night, the Wu ran through classics while giving each member space to shine.

When Raekwon went into “Ice Cream” from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., I was READY. I’m a girl, what can I say? In my head, I was definitely the caramel sundae. With Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Cappadonna joining in, it made the moment even sweeter.

Speaking of Method Man, his ENERGY was crazy. When “M.E.T.H.O.D. Man” dropped, we went to another level. Then came “All I Need,” and at that point, it was just me and Meth in the building. That will forever be one of my favorites.

Then came “C.R.E.A.M.” Immediately, I was a kid again at my aunt’s house, with my older cousin babysitting me and blasting Wu-Tang from his bedroom while I played in the living room. Something about that song grabbed me then, and hearing it live brought that memory right back.

One of my final songs of the night was “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit,” with the collective onstage giving us exactly what we needed.

But what really did it for me was looking around and seeing so much grown-man joy. Men who reminded me of my cousins, friends and uncles were suddenly kids again.

That’s what hip-hop does.
