Toy Gun Exchange Happening This Week In Buffalo, New York

Teaching gun responsibility is something that everyone should take seriously.  This week, it's a lesson they're trying to teach right here in Buffalo.

In the wake of gun violence that rocked Western New York and the entire country over the last couple weeks, a couple of organizations have put together what they call a "toy gun exchange."  The goal is to get kids to trade in their toy guns for other toys like skateboards, remote-controlled cars, and sporting equipment.

The exchange will happen today through Thursday right across from the Tops Market on Jefferson Ave in Buffalo.  They will be there from 12 pm-6 pm each day with hopes that they will be able to educate some children about gun violence.

"So the toy gun is the hook. I think a lot of the NRA and gun owners say 'hey wait a minute, you're taking away our guns, next you're going to be taking away our cars.' No, we're not taking away their guns. We're educating our children about guns," - Leonard Lane, president of Buffalo F.A.T.H.E.R.S.

Gun ownership and gun control have always been a hot topic because it's such a polarizing issue.  But it has become especially prevalent in conversation after Buffalo became a location of a mass shooting that killed 13 people just a few short weeks ago.

Last week the Supreme Court handed down a decision that will make it easier for citizens to carry a concealed handgun in public in New York State, overturning a law that has stood for over 100 years.
