Some college students in New York will see their costs increase. A new plan by Republican lawmakers will make college more expensive for many New Yorkers. The cost of college is already a barrier for many and it could become a roadblock for even more students.

Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled the idea of making community college tuition-free for New Yorkers. I have seen lots of Republicans scoff and say college shouldn't be free and accessible to everyone. But, Governor Hochul has a plan to grow the state's educated and skilled workforce, which will increase the number of residents paying more taxes back into the pot.

Sometimes I think certain people just want to keep everyone but themselves down. They don't want to see anyone else succeed and will be against something that they too can benefit from. There seems to be lots of voting against one's own interest due to hating others going around right now. Gov. Hochul's plan includes offering free community college tuition for adults aged 25 to 55. She wants to create a more developed workforce in New York in high-demand fields.

“When my dad got a college education, our whole family got a shot at a better life – and I want New Yorkers to have that opportunity. Under my plan, every New Yorker will have the chance to pursue a free associate degree at SUNY and CUNY community colleges to help fill the in-demand jobs of tomorrow.”

In what seems like an effort to make it more difficult for lower-income students, athletes, and high achievers to attend college, Republicans want to tax college scholarship money. They are floating different ways to make up for tax cuts to the wealthy and college students may pay the price. Republican lawmakers are looking to end the tax-free status for college scholarships.

Scholarship and fellowship monies have been tax-exempt as long as they are used for tuition and school-related expenses. The plan seems to look to punish people pursuing higher education to slash tax obligations for corporations and the ultra-wealthy. The Trump administration is actively trying to dismantle the Department of Education, as well. Pretty soon, America will be a land of uneducated, unskilled workers.
