‘Say Her Name’: HBO Is Set To Premiere Its Documentary On Sandra Bland
HBO just dropped a trailer for its new documentary that will focus on the life and death of Sandra Bland.
Bland, who was found hanged in a jail cell on July 13, 2015, after being arrested during a traffic stop in Texas, was known for being politically active. The Chicago-native was 28 when she passed away. Officials ruled her death a suicide but her story made national headlines and inspired protests as many questioned her arrest and the circumstances surrounding her death.
“Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland”, which is set to air next Monday, December 3rd, will focus on her life and chronicle her family’s fight for justice and battle with Texas authorities. It will also use nearly 30 video blogs that Bland had posted on social media, in which she addresses a multitude of topics including racism and police brutality.
The documentary was directed by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner.
“Approximately 30 ‘Sandy Speaks’ video blogs, which Sandra created herself, allowed the filmmakers to get to know Sandra Bland in a deeply personal way. Via these videos, Sandy herself emerges as a central voice in Say Her Name — an empowered, enlightened woman of color whose sharp, humorous, charismatic remarks address subjects from educating kids about black history to police brutality to the importance of natural hair,” said HBO in a statement. “Say Her Name takes viewers deep inside a story that galvanized activists across the country.”
The film is 1 hour and 43 minutes long and will air at 9 p.m. on December 3rd. It will also be available on demand.
