Buffalo and Western New York being a major international border community means that there is often all sorts of things and people trying to enter the United States through the 716. This is often a good thing, meaning there is a fair amount of tourism plus cross border spending at our regional retain outlets.

However, sometimes you see the bad side of living on the international boarder as there has also been an uptick in contraband being seized at the border, along with people trying to enter the country illegally.

The month of October 2024 has been very busy for US Customs and Border Protection officers stationed at the Port of Buffalo and the Peace Bridge, as law enforcement officers have seized more than 20 pounds of Psilocybin.

Psilocybin, which is more commonly known by its street name, Magic Mushrooms, is a very powerful hallucinogenic drug that has been around for decades.

According to information from the US Department of Homeland Security, officers have made a total of 15 different seizures over the last month, which has netted nearly 10 kilograms of shrooms.

Psilocybin was found in various materials and food products at the border, such as chocolate and prepared food.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have said the shrooms seized have a value of approximately $165,000 if sold on the streets.

Officers have been quite busy this month finding illegal drugs. In addition to these busts, authorities have also thousands of dollars worth of ecstasy pills and bricks of marijuana.
