Stats Say Crime Is Down In Buffalo, New York

For nearly 100 years, law enforcement officers in the United States have kept relatively uniform data on crime that occurs in the nation. The standards that the Uniform Crime Reporting Program put in place in 1930 help to give us an even baseline to be able to measure the condition of our society year over year.

When you have hard and accurate data, you're able to look back over time and see if things that are being done are helping to improve our communities or not. Whether we like it or not, crime is an unfortunate result of modern society, and what we do about it says a lot about who we are as a people.

When looking at the latest release of crime statistics from both the New York State Division of Criminal Justice and the City of Buffalo Police Department, overall crime is down and so is most individual categories.

When looking at the data over the last 5 years, the numbers in just about every single criminal category is down in Buffalo.

While we're seeing a lot more reporting about crimes that do happen, the numbers are down in homicides, rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts, and we as a people should be celebrating the facts.

While there are people all over the region who want you to think that we live in the middle of some 1980's dystopian crime movie like Escape From New York or something, the facts just don't support that feeling.

It's not just Buffalo that's seeing decreases in crime, the numbers are similar in other New York cities like Elmira, Jamestown, Rochester, Lackawanna, and more.
