
Multiple Lives Lost In New York Thruway Bus Crash
A tragic accident on the New York Thruway has left multiple people dead, including a child, according to reports. The bus had been in Western New York visiting Niagara Falls and was on its way back to New York City. New York State Police spokesperson James O’Callaghan said that the bus lost control and crashed into a ditch. It happened today, Friday, August 22, 2025, on Interstate 90 heading east between exits 48A and 49 in the town of Pembroke in Genesee County.
Witnesses reported that the bus lost control and entered the median. It then crossed to the southern shoulder of the Thruway and overturned. Multiple people were ejected from the bus, while others were trapped in the bus. It's not clear if the bus hit any other vehicles.

According to the New York State Police, early reports indicate that the bus had 50 passengers on it when it overturned. The NYSP confirmed that there are multiple injuries with several fatalities. CNN is reporting that a child has died. First responders transported the victims to area hospitals. The driver is alive and cooperating with authorities.
The Thruway is closed due to the horrific accident, so if you are travelling east, try to find an alternate route or be prepared for delays and detours. Please keep all involved in your prayers.

The 570-mile New York State Thruway is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the state. There were more than 1,364,317 visitors to the Thruway’s three welcome centers, and over 21.4 million visitors to its Service Areas in 2024. Police investigated 8,964 crashes on the NY Thruway last year. While it is a busy interstate, the Thruway Authority says it is safe.
"In comparison to the US Department of Transportation’s national fatality rates, the Thruway’s fatality rate for 2023* was 0.25 per/100 million vehicle miles (MVM) traveled, far below the estimated national rate of 1.17 fatalities per/100 MVM for the first half of 2024. There were 22 crashes resulting in 23 fatalities reported on the Thruway in 2023."
