New York State releases an annual report about unusual incidents that have occurred at all the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision facilities. Unusual incidents include inmate-on-inmate assaults, body fluid/human waste- attempted assault, hunger strikes, spit net used, medical emergencies, and more. The report also breaks down the number of assaults on staff.
Unusual incidents are serious occurrences that may impact upon or disrupt facility operations, have the potential for disrupting the Department’s public image, or might arouse widespread public interest.

The corrections officers who held an illegal strike earlier this year say that they are facing extreme dangers working in New York State prisons. Let's take a look at what the numbers say. There was a 13 percent increase in violence against staff members from 1,473 in 2022 to 1,671 in 2023.
As far as assaults on incarcerated individuals, there were 2,112 in 2023, an increase of 42 percent from 2022, when there were 1,488. Staff used 2,908 weapons in 2023, up 16 percent from 2022 when staff used 2,511 weapons. In 2024, prisoners filed 1,443 grievances against prison staff.
