Nonprofit 101: Free Workshop Series Coming to Buffalo

If you have ever had an idea to serve your community and wondered, “How do I actually turn this into a nonprofit?” this upcoming workshop series is for you.

Buffalo Common Council Majority Leader and Ellicott District Councilwoman Leah M. Halton-Pope is encouraging aspiring nonprofit leaders, entrepreneurs, and community builders to take advantage of Nonprofit 101: Build, Grow, Impact!, a three-part workshop series focused on the foundation of starting and operating a nonprofit organization.

The workshops will take place Monday, August 3, 10, and 17 from 5:00–6:00 PM at 334 E. Utica Street in Buffalo.

Presented in partnership with the Western New York Law Center and The Exchange at Beverly Gray, the series is designed to help participants understand some of the legal and organizational pieces that come with taking an idea from vision to an actual nonprofit.

Having a passion for helping people is important, but building an organization that can grow, receive funding, develop partnerships, and create sustainable impact requires structure.

Throughout the three-part series, participants will learn about nonprofit formation and compliance, filing a Certificate of Incorporation, reviewing corporate documents, and understanding ongoing compliance requirements.

For anyone who has been sitting on an idea for a youth program, community initiative, scholarship, arts organization, neighborhood project, or another mission-driven effort, this is an opportunity to better understand what happens behind the scenes of building the organization.

We often celebrate the programs, events, grants, and impact we see in our communities, but strong organizations are also built through paperwork, governance, compliance, planning, and having the right information from the beginning.

One thing I will always encourage Go Gettas to do is ASK. SEEK. KNOCK.

Sometimes the resource you need is already in your city, you just have to know where to find it and be willing to show up.

This workshop gives local entrepreneurs and emerging community leaders an opportunity to learn directly from professionals while asking questions about the nonprofit formation process. Whether you are just starting with an idea or already working toward establishing an organization, this series can help you better understand your next steps.
