One thing about Buffalo, we have talent. And I’m always here for creating more spaces where that talent can be seen, celebrated and supported.

That’s why this one caught my attention for the Town Rundown.

On Sunday, October 4, The Rook Project x Ujima Theater Co. are bringing The Pit: All-Styles Dance Battle to Ujima Theatre Company at 429 Plymouth Avenue in Buffalo.

And when they say all styles, that means come ready to DANCE.

There’s something special about events like this because they remind us that Buffalo’s arts and culture scene is bigger than what we may see every day. We have dancers, DJs, creatives and artists throughout this city who have been putting in work, building their craft and creating their own lanes. Sometimes, all they need is the right room to showcase it.

The Pit is giving them that room.

Hosted by Navi, the night will also feature DJ Tru Journey and The Foreign Fabric Collective, bringing the energy while dancers step into the circle and battle it out.

And yes, there are some coins on the line, too!

The winner is walking away with a $500 cash prize.

Dancer registration is available at the door from 5 PM until 6 PM for $10, with the battles officially beginning at 6 PM. If dancing isn’t your ministry, that doesn’t mean you have to miss the action. Spectator tickets are available through Ujima Company, so you can pull up, grab a seat and support the people brave enough to step into that circle.

I talk all the time about supporting our own, and that includes our creative community. Support isn’t always about knowing the person personally. Sometimes it’s buying the ticket. Sometimes it’s showing up. Sometimes it’s sharing the flyer. Sometimes it’s simply being in the room and giving somebody the energy they need to keep going.

So, Buffalo, if dance culture is your thing, The Pit needs to be on your calendar.

Dancers, bring your style, your confidence and your A-game.

Everybody else? Come ready to watch Buffalo show out.
