Have you heard about the cancer awareness and health event from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Frank E. Meriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. here in Buffalo?

It's just the latest event where you'll find Mark Talley and his organization, Agents for Advocacy. Mark is actively working to address the health and socioeconomic disparities in our community — and as I always say, "Health is wealth."

On Oct. 22, he'll speak at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center's annual Roswell Cares Community Day about the impact socioeconomic conditions can have on one's health. Roswell Park will have speakers talking about cancers that impact the African American community greatly, along with their new mobile lung cancer unit named “Eddy."

Mark was inspired to start Agents for Advocacy after his mother, Geraldine C. Talley, was fatally shot by a white supremacist at Tops on May 14, 2022. Prior to that, he faced a number of academic, social, and health struggles — including falling in with the wrong crowd in high school, dropping out of the first college he attended, and trying to manage partial complex epilepsy. He understands many of the challenges facing our community and is committed to increasing awareness for socioeconomic equity and equality in impoverished areas.
