Just as Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of summer in most places in America, Labor Day Weekend marks the unofficial end of summer for many across the country.

Like many other places, Buffalo looks to Labor Day Weekend as a final hurrah before returning to the grind of winter and school. However, before we put away the grills and shorts, we must ensure we send summer off right. Labor Day is one of those federal holidays where we should celebrate all of our labor's contributions to our nation and spend time recharging our batteries to keep on going.

Doing these things helps us prove how great America is every single day.

What is Labor Day and Why Do We Celebrate it

According to the United States Department of Labor, a Federal agency in the executive branch, Labor Day is a Federal Holiday that celebrates American workers' social and economic achievements. The holiday is rooted in the late 1800s when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize workers' contributions to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

It is celebrated on the first Monday in September as designated by Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103).

This Labor Day, let us stand in solidarity with America’s workers, who are the engines behind our Nation’s prosperity. Let us celebrate labor unions, who give voice to our workers and ensure they are given the dignity, respect, and protections in the workplace that they deserve. And let us recommit to ensuring that every hardworking American has a fair shot at achieving the promise of the American Dream for generations to come.
