As the calendar inches closer to the official start of summer, Memorial Day Weekend often marks the unofficial start of summer in places across America, including Buffalo.

However, before we get started with all of our grilling and chilling, we must remember the reason for the season and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for all of the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America.

What is Memorial Day, and Why Do We Celebrate it

According to the United States Government Publishing Office (GPO), a Federal agency in the legislative branch, Memorial Day is a Federal Holiday that commemorates the women and men who have died while in military service. It is celebrated on the last Monday in May as designated by Federal law (36 U.S.C. 116).

Remember those who gave their all in the service of America, in the service of freedom, in the service of justice. Remember their sacrifice, their valor, and their grace. Remember their smiles; their loves; their laughter; their essential, vibrant, and transcendent humanity. For while we stand amid monuments of stone, we must never forget that each of these markers, for those known and unknown, here at Arlington and far beyond represent a precious life: a son, a daughter, a mother, a spouse, a brother, a sister, a friend, a neighbor

-Joseph R. Biden, 46th President of the United States

The holiday has been commemorated since at least 1865 when a group of freedmen gathered in Charleston, South Carolina, towards the end of the American Civil War to honor and give proper burials to members of the Union Army who fought against the traitors and insurrectionists.

It's significant to note that New York State was the first in the United States of America to make Memorial Day an official holiday in 1873.
