Everyone wants to manage their money better and save, so I'm embarking on a series of interviews with KeyBank about financial fitness. You can catch them on air between 10 am and 2 pm each Thursday or online HERE.

In this week's interview, I talked to Ethan Grant, branch manager of KeyBank's Chippewa location, about the importance of building good credit, which is crucial to have when it comes to making major life purchases like buying a car.

You can listen to the full interview below:

I started off by asking Ethan what is one way people can start establishing good credit:

A secure credit card is one way you can start building credit. You put an amount on the deposit greater than or equal to the credit line. For example, the credit card issuer might request a $300 deposit for a $300 credit line, this way the bank has the money for the balance if you charge it on deposit at all times. They may also give eligible clients the opportunity to graduate to an unsecure credit card, which means you don't have any money on deposit with the bank.

Now that you've got credit established and are feeling good, what are some ways to keep your credit good?

Charge wisely. A smart way to build your credit history is making sure you never charge more than you can pay off in a single month. Also, remember that balances matter. Your credit score is partially based on how much credit you have available. This means that if you have two credit cards with $500 limits but only $200 available across both cards, your score will lower. Most importantly, you want to make payments on time. A single payment made 30 days late can have a significant impact on your credit score. Set a reminder on your calendar five days before any payment is due so you can schedule the payment to be made on time. On time payments mean an easier road to continue to build credit.
