Yes representation! Issa Rae is shaking up Hollywood standards with her new role in the upcoming rom-com called “The Lovebirds.”

She will star as Kumail Nanjiani’s love interest in the film that will begin production later this month, according to hollywoodreporter.

The movie is about a couple on the brink of a breakup. “The pair subsequently become embroiled in a bizarre and hijinks-filled murder mystery, and as they get close to clearing their names and solving the case, the twosome need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.”

The script was written by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall as well as Martin Gero. The film is being directed by Michael Showalter, who directed Nanjiani in “The Big Sick.” Issa and Nanjiani are also serving as executive producers of the film along with Showalter.

Nanjiani broke out with The Big Sick, which earned him and his co-writer wife Emily V. Gordon and Oscar nom for best original screenplay. It became a sleeper hit in the summer of 2017.

Even though landing a starring role in “The Lovebirds” is major, this won’t actually be the first time Issa Rae has been chosen to be a leading lady in a romantic comedy.

Back in October, we reported that she was cast in “American Princess,” which will be about a woman “who moves to London and finds herself drawn into a world of wealth and high society, and falls in love in a very unexpected way.”

Paul Feig will be producing the project alongside Jessie Henderson and Brendan O’Brien through Feigco Entertainment. Amy Aniobi, who has worked with Rae on her hit HBO show “Insecure,” has written the script for the project.

Before she takes over the rom-com genre, Issa’s next big anticipated project is “Little,” her body-morphing comedy starring herself, Regina Hall and Marsai Martin.

We’re looking forward to all the #BlackGirlMagic that Issa is about to bring to the big screen!
