Losing 40 pounds isn't about finding the perfect workout; it's about building a lifestyle. Here's what I'm learning on my fitness journey and a few Buffalo events that prove moving your body can actually be fun.

For years I've heard people say, "Just get in the gym." The more I commit to my goal of losing 40 pounds, the more I realize that isn't the full story.

The gym is important, but it can't be the only thing.

I've learned that real change happens when you combine consistency in the kitchen with consistency in movement. You can't outwork unhealthy habits, and you definitely can't expect your body to change if you're only showing up once or twice a week. Nutrition matters. Sleep matters. Water matters. And finding workouts you actually enjoy matters too.

One thing I know about myself: I get bored. If every workout feels the same, eventually I'll start making excuses. That's why I'm giving myself permission to explore different ways to move my body. Some days it's strength training. Other days it's Pilates, yoga, swimming, golf, or simply getting outside for a walk. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is to just keep moving.

The best part about this journey is discovering that fitness doesn't have to feel like punishment. So many times I have dragged my body into the gym not happy but doing it anyway. But I learned at the gym, and on this fitness journey, there can be community. It can be fun. It can even become something you look forward to.

If you're looking for new ways to stay active around Buffalo, here are a few events you should check out this month.

On Wednesday, August 19, head to Trappin' at Deco at Deco Lounge for a 50-minute workout set to your favorite trap and hip-hop hits, followed by a cocktail hour. It's proof that fitness and fun can exist in the same room.

If running is more your speed, or you just want to walk with a great group, don't miss the BUFLO Night Run on Saturday, August 22, at Hoyt Lake. All paces are welcome, and the evening includes music, glow-in-the-dark fun, a post-run smoothie from Uplift Nutrition, and a chance to connect with Buffalo's growing running community alongside Sweat Social, Seven Miles Run Club, and Keep It Moving Run Club.

Earlier that same day, Beau Fleuve's 5K Run-Walk in Delaware Park offers another opportunity to get moving. Whether you're chasing a personal record or simply enjoying a walk with friends, everyone is welcome. Best of all, registration is free.

I'm learning that this journey isn't just about losing weight. It's about gaining discipline, confidence, better health, and a stronger mindset.

Forty pounds won't disappear overnight, but every workout, every healthy meal, and every step forward gets me closer to the woman I'm working to become.

So if you've been waiting for the perfect time to start, this is your sign.

Move your body. Find your people. Stay consistent. Your future self will thank you.
