Hey, it's Yasmin Young and I'm teaming up with Hennessy to highlight black-owned businesses right here in Buffalo and Western New York as part of the Hennessy Sable Series.

This week, I talked with Philip Davis, the co-founder of Skovu TV, a black-owned and operated streaming service that originated right here in Buffalo. This incredible service is giving a voice to content creators across the globe a voice and the resources to tell their stories.

Check out some of the conversation I had with Philip below:

Yasmin: Let's talk about how this idea came about. What started this?
I have a theater company and we were doing original productions for almost 13 years. So in 2018 is when we founded Skovu TV (me and my partners Cory Green and Jimmy Davis). At the time we were doing a series called Daddy's Girls Club that's currently on our network (and Amazon Prime). I was doing research on Netflix originals, and the more research I did the more opportunities I found. We had all of these projects. I know so many filmmakers and show makers in the town that why not create something that we can all benefit from and not have to wait on a Netflix or Hulu to pick it up?

Yasmin: For someone who is a content creator that is looking for the right home for their content? How can they connect with you?
They can go right to SkovuTv.com and there's a "be a creator" link on there. They can submit a link and all of the information is on our website. Our team will review it and we currently now have more than 160 hours of content -- across 8 different countries. We have content and subscribers from all over the world, so not only are you able to monetize it, but you'll also be able to be exposed worldwide.

Yasmin: What type of content are you looking for and do you hope to carry?
The majority of things on our network are short films, feature films and documentaries. But we welcome everything. We want to try to get more series on the network.

Yasmin: For folks who want to consume the content that is on the network, how can get their subscription?
They can download the app -- on the GooglePlay store, AmazonPlay store, we're on Chromecast. We're in the process of developing a process that will allow us to be on their App Store, but in the meantime, you can just go to SkovuTV.com if you have an iPhone or any other streaming device.

For more info -- on everything from submitting your content to subscribing to their service -- visit SkovuTV on the web here.
