Buffalo Native Desmond Oliver Is Ready For His First Head Coaching Job
The University of Tennesse is taking full advantage of Buffalo's athletic talent, Rob Lanier has been coaching at Tennesee for a while, he is a Buffalo native, Davonte Gaines, who is in his second year, and I must add, he's my cousin, is also a Buffalo Native, and now Desmond Oliver is up for a head coaching job.
According to WIVB, Oliver had helped out Fajri Ansari at Turner/Carroll High while earning his master's in student personnel administration at Buffalo State in the early 90s. Coaching was never really part of his plan. Desmond Oliver's long-term goal was to get his Ph.D. at UB and work in administration on a college campus and make a difference in young people's lives.
Desmond Oliver worked his way up to his coaching job when long time friend Rob Lanier, suggested to him that there was a job opening at Niagara, Rob had started his career there before moving to St. Bonaventure. Desmond got the interview, and the rest was history.
Desmond Oliver has overcome every possible obstacle any young black man from the east of Buffalo could possibly overcome, and now he has a chance to lead a team to an NCAA Tournament Championship as a Head Coach. This is another great look for our city and a positive motivator for our young children in the community to see happening.
