One of the greatest pastimes that most Americans enjoy is getting in their automobile and taking to the open roads. Car culture in the US is something that people of all colors and creeds enjoy in these great States.
It's easy to see why and how, with 50 states that have every type of climate condition, there is a place to drive for just about everyone. That includes the Great State of New York. With more than 170,000 miles of public roads that run from Niagara Falls to Montauk and everywhere in between, some of the best driving you can find in the world exists right here in the Empire State.

The researchers at WalletHub wondered that exact same thing and, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, American Automobile Association, Federal Highway Administration, and more, ranked the top 100 American cities as the best and worst to drive in.
The team at WalletHub looked at several different data points and applied a score to each city based on the average cost to own and maintain a car, the traffic in a city, its infrastructure, the overall safety of the area, and how easy it is to get access to vehicles and maintenance services.
When ranking these items, it became pretty clear which cities in New York State were the best and worst to drive in.

Ranking as the 97th worst in the nation, it should be no surprise that New York City is the worst place to drive in New York State. The only places in America worse than NYC are Washington, DC, Oakland, and Philadelphia. The Big Apple gets very low marks in the cost of ownership, the quality of city infrastructure, and the ability to find maintenance.
The best New York City to drive is Buffalo, which ranks 48th best nationally. Even though the city has to deal with snow from time to time, it gets high marks in several categories. This is yet another reason why Buffalo is the Empire State's best city.
