10 New York Cities Ranked By Diversity

When you travel to the Empire State, it won't take you long to realize that New York is the greatest state in the union. From the mighty waters of Niagara Falls to the concrete jungle of the Big Apple, from the canyons of Letchworth to the mountains of the Adirondacks, New York State is one of the most diverse places to be.

That diversity applies to the various regions of the state and the people who live in it. The people of New York come in just about every shape, color, and size and are exactly what makes New York so great. So many different cultures mixing together give the Empire State its flavor. While New York State as a whole is pretty diverse, does that diversity translate to its cities?

The various cities, towns, and villages that dot the state's landscape are all pretty different. Some are extremely culturally diverse, while others are quite homogeneous. But how do the various municipalities rank when compared to each other and to the top 500 cities in the country?

WalletHub compiled data from more than 500 cities in the United States, ranking them across more than 10 different metrics to come up with a listing of the most and least diverse cities in America. They then broke them down by city population size: Large cities - more than 300,000 people; midsize cities - 100,000 to 300,000 people; and Small cities - Fewer than 100,000 people, to develop their rankings.

Since we only really care about what happens in the Empire State, we broke down the details of the 10 New York Cities that made the list, which are quite interesting.

As should be expected, New York City ranks as the Empire State's most diverse city and the nation's sixth most diverse. Buffalo is in the middle of the pack, ranking as the nation's 143rd most diverse and New York's 5th most diverse. Surprisingly, but not quite surprisingly, Cheektowaga comes in as the least diverse in New York, ranking 348th out of 501 in the nation.
