If you were to ask economists and stock market analysts about the state of the economy in America, they would likely tell you that things are going very well on the financial front. With corporate profits soaring and the stock market surging, things would seem like they're going pretty well to the average person.

However, as the saying goes, everything that glitters isn't gold. If you need proof of the validity of that statement, you don't need to look much further than the number of retail outlets closing their doors over the last few months.

In 2024, several stores and businesses shut down nationwide, affecting the region. Over the last few months, we've seen manufacturers like Sumitomo Rubber lock their doors on employees, national retailers like Bobs and Big Lots shut their doors, and locally owned shops like W.G. Arthur Co. in Orchard Park close as well. We're hearing news that another national retail shop is closing.

American Freight Is Shutting Its Doors

Franchise Group Inc., the parent company of American Freight, is filing bankruptcy, and the furniture shop seems to be among the victims of the corporation's financial troubles.

According to Fox Business, American Freight is closing all 328 of its stores across the country, including its Western New York stores in North Tonawanda, Rochester, and Syracuse.

The New York Post reports that the retail outlet is having a major sale with discounts of up to 30%. Those discounts should increase as the stores' final closures inch closer to completion.

American Freights, the parent company that also owns Pet Supplies Plus, The Vitamin Shoppe, and Buddy’s Home Furnishings, doesn't plan to close any of its other operations at this time.

Western New York Businesses That Closed In 2024

Some of the businesses were new, and others served our community for 40 years. We are going to miss them greatly.
