$3,000 just to drive the kiddies around? Sign me up! first student is desperate for school bus drivers and are offering up to 3000 dollars in signing bonus just being a bus driver.

now this isn't just a buffalo problem apparently this is a nationwide shortage of bus drivers more importantly CDL drivers.

The company released a news statement yesterday outlining the 5 steps to solve there problem

  • To immediately improve service, First Student is bringing in approximately 15 professional drivers from other areas to help fill the shortage. This is done at no additional cost to the district.

  • To work to have all local drivers driving local routes, an immediate 16 percent increase in starting wages, from $16.40 an hour to $19.07. This is in addition to the 2.5 percent increase implemented in September.

  • To improve our retention of experienced drivers, as well as attract more experienced drivers, an increase of the top driver wage of 3.4 percent to $21.75 an hour. This is in addition to the 2.5 percent increase implemented in September.

  • To continue to recruit and successfully retain drivers, an elevated series of wage increases starting in the 2020-2021 school year.

  • To aggressively attract and retain drivers, a series of sign-on incentives, including: $500 sign-on bonus for drivers with no experience, which includes paid training. $3,000 sign-on bonus for professional drivers. Referral bonuses for current employees ranging from $500 to $1,500.
