In New York State, there are 44 state prisons, with 15 classified as maximum security. As of the September 2024 Monthly Report, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) houses,

"33,589 incarcerated individuals and the supervision of 17,351 active releasees in New
York State. In total, there are 24,630 parolees currently under DOCCS’ responsibility, which includes parolees actively reporting in New York and out-of-state, those in the violation process, in absconding status, deported, or locally incarcerated."

Out of the 44 prisons, only 5 of them house women inmates. There is a total of 1,366 incarcerated females in the New York prison system, as of September 2024, compared to 32,109 male and 99 non-binary prisoners. Only one of the women's facilities is classified as a maximum-level security facility.
