Somehow, the great state of New York has been avoiding the kind of weather we usually see around the state this time of year. In fact, large parts of the state have been dealing with near-drought conditions, and the risk of forest fires has been on the rise over the last few weeks.

However, as we get closer to the holiday season, the potential for winter weather in the Empire State is rising. Now, the National Weather Service is trying to help people prepare for the inevitable.

Winter storm watches, and alerts have been issued all across New York's Southern Tier and Northeastern Pennsylvania as a series of storms are brewing in the region. According to the Binghamton office of the National Weather Service, there is potential for a large amount of snowfall, which would accumulate and bring all the other things that happen when you have dense, wet, heavy snowfall.

More than six inches of snow could fall over the next few hours in the area, which can have an extended impact. People who live near Elmira, Ithaca, Binghamton, Courtland, Bath, Cooperstown, and the surrounding areas should be sure to make preparations as winter finally starts.

While no watches or advisories have been issued for Buffalo, Western New York, Rochester, or Central New York, temperatures are expected to fall around the state, and some areas will start to see their first snowfalls of the year.
