Now that the holiday weekend has come and gone, there are all sorts of things that point to the fact that summer is over. With kids heading back to school and people getting ready for autumn preparations, the signs that summer is over are quickly approaching. If that wasn't enough, even some trees are starting to see their leaves turn colours already.

Now, while summer isn't officially over this year until September 22, 2026, the unofficial end of summer happened on Labor Day 2026, which was Monday, September 7, 2026. While there are plenty of summer activities left to do this year, many people are shifting gears.

The summer of 2026 was one for the history books, and it was also the longest unofficial summer that can ever happen.

While the 2026 astronomical summer season, which is the official summer season, is 93 days long, running from June 21, 2026, through September 22, 2026, the unofficial summer is much longer. That's all thanks to a quirk in the way the dates fall using the Gregorian Calendar: this year's unofficial summer, which ran from Memorial Day Monday, May 25, through Labor Day Monday, September 7, gave us 106 calendar days of 'summer', or a full 15 weeks of the season.

That's significant because it is the longest time between those dates, as Memorial Day and Labor Day have specific date-related requirements.

A summer this long doesn't happen very often and will not happen again until the year 2037.
