With the recent revelation that a blast of winter weather might be on the way to Western and Central New York, maybe it's time for those of us who have been dreading the arrival of the typical weather patterns in our region to start ensuring we're ready. There is a saying that if you stay ready, you never have to get ready, and if the predictions from the various meteorologists are accurate, then we have our work cut out for us.

One of the most tragic things that happened during the Buffalo Blizzard of 2022 was all the people who got stuck in their cars during the snowstorm and didn't have the proper preparation or training to hold out until emergency crews could get to them.

If you have an automobile and will be on the roads at any point this winter, there are a few tips and tricks you can start preparing now to make sure you're in good shape when the snowflakes start flying.

Tips To Make Your Car Winter Ready

Now, before you even get on the road, there are some simple things you can do to your car to ensure it's all set for the snow.

First and foremost, please make sure you have tires that are in good condition and have enough tread on them. We've all seen people slipping and sliding along the road during snowfall with tires that aren't winter-ready. Don't let that be you this year. Then, once you've done that, give your car a good once over by checking the condition of your car's battery, topping off any fluids, replacing your wipers if needed, and giving the braking system a once over.

Once you get to that, you should be ready to hit the road.

When driving in snowy and icy conditions, the key thing to remember is to take your time and drive slowly. That includes making sure to gently accelerate and brake, along with giving more distance between you and other cars. You need that space because black ice can be anywhere, and that extra space will give you time to get your car under control if you find yourself in a skid.
