New Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Buffalo and Western New York
The last few days in Buffalo and Western New York had given us relatively mild temperatures, which has been unusual considering how cold it had been when the last polar vortex brought frigid temperatures to many parts of the US that don't usually see it. Places across the south, like Dallas, Atlanta, and Charlotte, saw snow for the first time in years, while we've leveled out some in the 716.
However, according to a new update from the National Weather Service, that is going to change starting Monday, January 13, 2025, as a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Metro Buffalo area, along with the city's first ring suburbs.
A cold front is blowing into Buffalo, and it's going to bring with it high winds and below-freezing temps that will make the midday and afternoon drive more difficult than the morning was.
Snow is expected to fall in a quick burst that may catch drivers by surprise if you're not prepared for it.

The snow is expected to start as a general snowfall but then transition to lake effect snow as the winds pick up and blow over Lake Erie.
As of Sunday, January 12, 2025, Lake Erie was still sitting at a balmy 36 degrees, with very little ice having formed on the eastern end of the lake. This, of course, means we're primed for a nice blast of lake-effect snow if other conditions are right.
National Weather Service officials are also predicting that we could also see some significant lake effect snow build up during the remainder of the week, so if you have to be outside in the weather, now is the perfect time to make sure you're prepared.
