According to WXXI, crime in Rochester has decreased. There were 36 homicides in 2025 compared to the 47 in 2024. Shootings - both fatal and non-fatal - were also down. In 2024, there were 30 deaths attributed to gun violence and 176 non-fatal shootings compared to 24-gun violence deaths in 2025, and 138 non-deadly shooting incidents. Even though there was a decrease, any lives lost to gun violence is too many!

Willie Lightfoot, a former Rochester City Councilmember and founder of the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition, to WXXI that even though the numbers reflect an improvement on violent crime, people still don't feel safe.

“People's perception doesn't match the numbers. To me, that's an area of improvement that all of us, meaning those that work in the space of gun violence and preventing violence in the community, and the government, and the police, everybody, where we can do a better job. Because people don't feel that safe, they don't feel these numbers. When they see that on TV, they go, ‘Okay, yeah, that looks good, but that's not how I feel. I’m still not letting my kids go play at the park.’”
