Originally known as the National League on Urban Conditions Among Negroes, the National Urban League is among the oldest civil rights organizations in America that works to advance economic and social justice for African Americans and other minorities, along with fighting against racial discrimination for all.

The National Urban League, which is headquartered in New York City, has 90 affiliate offices spread around the nation, including one in Buffalo where unfortunately a horrific racially motivated domestic terrorist attack occurred that took the lives of 10 people and forever changed its community.

The Urban League movement works to provide economic empowerment, educational opportunities, and the guarantee of civil rights for all of America's underserved and underrepresented.

To that end, since 1976 the Urban League has issued an annual report called The State of Black America Report.

What Is The State of Black America Report?

Just like many governments and organizations issue an annual report to their customers or constituents, like the President's State of the Union address or New York State Governor's State of the State address, the Urban League issues a State of Black America Report.

The report seeks to explore many of the inequities across the country's economics, employment, education, health, housing, criminal justice, and civic participation systems through research and the words of our contributors. Each annual report contains commentary and analysis from national experts and leaders in many areas that impact the daily lives of minorities.

The theme of the 47th edition of this report is Democracy in Peril: Confronting the Threat Within. That threat has directly impacted many comminutes across the country, but especially so in Buffalo where 10 people were killed in a racially motivated attack on a poor minority community in Western New York.

This heinous event reminded us that hate-fueled violence still exists in our society, and extremists are here to destroy anything that is just or equal.
-Thomas Beauford, Jr., President and CEO of the Buffalo Urban League

The 2023 State of Black America report examines extremism, how it impacts public policy, and how it threatens our safety, way of life, and the entire Democracy of the country.
