The History of Black Music Month
Rather from Hip Hop to Blues , to Gospel or Blues all this music is and has a very heavy African American influence. Maybe you didn't know that this music also influences a lot of other genres that were partially inspired by African American musicians. This is why in the year 1979, then President Jimmy Carter declared the month of June to be Black Music Month.
Its purpose was to recognize the role African Americans have played in helping to shape music of all styles. This was informally until 2000 when the House of Representatives signed off on a presidential order to make it official.
In 2009, former President Barack Obama changed the name of Black Music Month to African-American Music Appreciation Month so last year President Trump released a proclamation for people to use the month of June to raise awareness and appreciation of African American music. Happy Black Music Month.
