Town Rundown: Free Swim Lessons Available for Local Families This Summer
Summer in Buffalo means finding every excuse to get near the water. Whether it's a day at the beach, afternoons at the splash pad, weekends by the pool, or family trips around Lake Erie, water becomes part of how we enjoy the season.
But for many families, especially in the African American community, swimming hasn't always been a skill passed down from one generation to the next.
Let's be honest. Many of us grew up hearing someone in the family say, "I never learned how to swim." For decades, access to pools, swim programs, and aquatic recreation wasn't always available in Black communities. As a result, many adults either learned later in life or never learned at all. While that conversation may not happen often, it's a reality that continues to impact families today.
That's one reason the YMCA's free swim lesson program deserves attention.
The YMCA is offering no-cost swim lessons for children ages 6 months to 12 years old through a New York State-funded initiative focused on water safety and swim education. Families can register online using the code NYSWIMS1 while spots remain available.
This isn't just about keeping kids busy during summer break. It's about equipping them with a skill that can save lives.
Swimming builds confidence. It teaches discipline. It creates opportunities for children to participate in activities many of us may not have experienced growing up. More importantly, it helps children feel comfortable and capable around water.
In a city surrounded by waterways, learning to swim shouldn't be viewed as a luxury. It should be viewed as a life skill.
As summer gets underway and families begin planning activities for their children, this is one opportunity worth taking advantage of. Not because it's free, but because of what it represents: access, safety, confidence, and the chance to make sure our children have opportunities that weren't always available to us.
That's a summer investment worth making.
