The snow and ice conditions we've been experiencing this winter are bound to lead to slip and falls, which can result in some pretty serious and even life-threatening injuries.

That's why I decided to talk to Rich Barnes at The Barnes Firm - One of America’s Largest Injury Law Firms - right here in Buffalo. I asked him what steps people should take should they ever find themselves in a slip and fall situation:

Make note of the conditions that led to the slip and fall. That's something that could even be done in advance. For example, if you live in an apartment complex and notice that the property manager is not keeping sidewalks and steps properly cleared of snow and ice, that's something that you might want to report because the notice requirement under the law becomes important if it leads to an accident.

Rich also stressed the importance of making sure you take pictures of the area where the accident occurred and getting medical attention for your injuries:

If an accident does in fact happen and there's an injury that results, recording what happened is important. By that I mean, if possible, you should take photographs of the conditions that existed so they can't be denied later down the road. If there are witnesses, that's something important to consider too. Also, follow up with medical attention soon after the accident happens to record the fact that an injury resulted from what happened.
