Only 2 Cities In New York State Are Among The 20 Safest Cities In U.S.
There are lots of dangerous places in New York State, but what about the safest cities? According to Neighborhood Scout, only two in NYS made the list of the top 20 for 2022. And let me tell you, they are places you've probably never heard of. Maybe that's why they are so safe, no one knows where they are. When creating its list, Neighborhood Scout uses crime data that the Federal Bureau of Investigation compiles from police departments and law enforcement all over the United States.
Our research reveals the 100 safest cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Data used for this research are 1) the number of total crimes reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and 2) the population of each city. Based on the latest national data available at the time of publication, representing calendar year 2020 and released in September 2021, this report reveals interesting patterns about safety from crime in America.
Neighborhood Scout analyzed the top 100 safest cities, but I limited it to the top 20 (because who has time to go through all 100).
The safest city in the U.S. is located in Massachusetts. I've never heard of it and you probably haven't either. It's named Franklin. The city has a population of 33,261 and a crime rate (per 1,000 residents) of 1.3. To put it in perspective, in New York, you have a 1 in 287 chance of being a victim of a violent crime. In Franklin, you have a 1 in 5,544 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime.
