Pharrell Sends Cease-and-Desist Letter to President Trump for Playing “Happy” at Midwest Rally
Pharrell Williams is not happy with the way the Trump Administration used his music, and he's taking legal action.
Just hours after the horrific massacre that transpired at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh over the weekend, The Hollywood Reporter reports the Tweeter-in-Chief took the stage at one of his MAGA rallies at an airport hangar in Murphysboro, Ill. while the N.E.R.D rapper's international hit "Happy," from Despicable Me 2, played in the background.
Last night (Oct. 29), attorney Howard King sent a cease-and-desist letter to the White House on behalf of Pharrell.
"On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged 'nationalist,' you played his song 'Happy' to a crowd at a political event in Indiana," King states in the letter. "There was nothing 'happy' about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose."
King let it be known that the use of "Happy" was done without permission granted from Pharrell, and constitutes as copyright infringement. The letter also establishes that Pharrell will not allow the President or his administration to use the song or any of Skateboard P's music at any time.
"Pharrell has not, and will not, grant you permission to publicly perform or otherwise broadcast or disseminate any of his music," King continues. "The use of 'Happy' without permission constitutes copyright infringement."
Based on the tense tone of the letter, it doesn't seem like 45 will ever play "Happy" at any public setting again nor will he ever receive the hook-up for Pharrell and Adidas' NMD Hu Solar Pack.
