In a sinister plot to pay the victim back for her disinterest in dating him, officer Atickul Islam posed as an ICE agent and ordered her and her family to turn themselves into an ICE facility by April 15, according to The Mirror. Islam was allegedly upset that the victim did not want to date him after they met online.
This incident comes as there is an uptick in criminals posing as ICE agents. Many people who have encountered ICE agents this year say the officers often make it very difficult to identify them as legitimate law enforcement by concealing their identities. Islam pleaded not guilty to a charge of personation of a federal officer and was released on an unsecured, $25,000 recognizance bond. He was also suspended from the NYPD and had to turn in his service weapon and badge.

In a massive erosion in the trustworthiness of law enforcement, bad guys have been pretending to be ICE agents. This year alone, a South Carolina man was arrested for impersonating an ICE agent and trying to detain a group of Latino men. The actions of many ICE raids make it difficult for people to know if the agent is real or fake, as many ICE officers have chosen to hide their identities and even wear plainclothes. In another incident, police in Philadelphia charged a Temple University student with allegedly impersonating ICE officers on campus. In North Carolina, a man posing as an ICE agent allegedly sexually assaulted a woman and threatened to deport her, according to CNN. These are examples of why transparency is necessary with agents representing ICE and Homeland Security.
