New York Is Fighting Back Against Trump’s Agenda
New York State is pushing back against Trump's directives. As Trump tries to push his goals forward, elected officials in his home state are putting up roadblocks every step of the way. While Trump supporters may feel the urge to get upset, many Republican objectives, such as abortion have been deemed "states' rights." Once the argument has been made that states have the right to choose, it's kind of hypocritical to step back and say that now states should have no rights.

New York State Is Fighting Trump's Agenda
As each state has now been able to decide its own abortion laws, New York State is working to protect doctors in the state from overreach by politicians in other states that have essentially banned abortion and women's reproductive rights. S.36A/A.2145A, which was signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul, adds another layer of protection for doctors. It allows doctors to ask the pharmacy to put their practice's name, rather than their personal names, on labels for abortion medications - mifepristone, misoprostol, and generic alternatives.
"Thanks to New York’s shield law, providers in the State can provide medication used to treat abortion to patients in hostile states, assisting women who might otherwise struggle to access abortion care."
New York also has partnered with law firms and non-profits around the U.S. to provide New Yorkers and visitors with free legal information about accessing abortions. Women can call the hotline at 212-899-5567.

In addition to further protecting women's rights to reproductive healthcare, New York State's Attorney General Letitia James warned hospitals in the state that they should continue providing gender-affirming care for transgender youth under the age of 19. On Monday, February 4, 2025, Attorney James issued a letter stating that they would be violating state law if they stopped.
"Regardless of the availability of federal funding, we write to further remind you of your obligations to comply with New York State laws."
Many of Trump's executive orders have been met with lawsuits that either stop or pause his attempts to push his agenda. Attorney General James has joined with other Democratic states to sue to stop moves Trump is trying to make unilaterally.
Attorney General James also led a coalition of 22 state attorneys general that won a temporary restraining order against Trump to stop his administration from blocking federal agency grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs. On Friday, Judge John J. McConnell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island issued a temporary restraining order that blocks the administration from illegally freezing funding.
